Hello, my name is Jemma! More information coming soon!
This puppy came to GHGSDR from a backyard breeder who decided he had too many dogs on his hands. She had scars on her neck from spending all her days chained outside, a wound on her side, and a spirit that was nearly broken. In the eight or so months he'd had her, her owner hadn't even bothered to name her. She was literally frozen, cowering in terror of what might happen to her next, but even so you could see in her eyes that she wanted very much to love someone.
The volunteers for Greater Houston GSD Rescue gave her the name Jemma and provided her with a warm bed, good food, and gentle discipline. With the reassurance and kindness of her new friends (both two- and four-legged), Jemma learned that good things come from people, and her fear began to subside. Now, she spends her days frolicking and exploring, instead of shaking with fear in the corner of her kennel. She is still fearful of some new situations, but she continues to make progress every day. Being such a young dog and a curious soul, we expect her to grow into a confident and beautiful dog.
I know what you're thinking - is she really a German Shepherd? The answer is yes - she's what is called a bicolour. Though similar in markings to a Doberman, Jemma is a shepherd through and through. You can find out more about GSD color varieties by clicking the "health and genetics" button at the top of the page.
She is a truly gentle soul who loves everyone. Her particular favorite is Hannah the cat, whom she follows around and bathes with her tongue. She also loves romping with the big dog in her foster home and cuddling with the people in the house. She hasn't spent much time around children, but her extremely gentle nature and young age would make her a good match for a family with gentle children, as long as the children respect her need to adjust to new situations slowly.
She adores her walks and is a natural on a leash. In addition to being fully house trained, she has learned to stay off the furniture and to sit before receiving affection or treats. She is calm indoors and rides well in a car. She has a lot of puppyhood still to enjoy, so an obedience class with her new family would really help her finish learning her manners. Above all, Jemma loves to be loved - her favorite thing to do is sniff your face (and sometimes lick it). She missed out on a lot of affection the first months of her life, and so she is trying to make up for lost time by following you around everywhere to get ear rubs, tummy rubs, petting, really anything you dish out. :)
Jemma deserves a warm home with a loving heart - does yours have room for her?
