Hello, my name is Phoenix!
This gorgeous boy came to GHGSDR horribly abused and in appalling medical and physical condition. We got an email from the Brazoria County Shelter begging us to help one of the worst cases of abuse to a German Shepherd they had ever seen. They wrote that "A purebred GSD looks like he has had a type of chemical poured on him and was then set on fire.It is a gruesome sight, and whoever or whatever did this to him is extremely demented. He is very thin and weak, but right now he appears stable but in need of immediate medical help a place to recover and rest, a foster home and someone that will care for him. He is very scared, his feet are also burned and very swollen, and it is hard for him to even walk. He is a beautiful GSD, black and, with what is of brown markings. What will really break your heart is that he wagged his tail when he saw us. He does not deserve to die like this and could make a full recovery if we can find a place for him to rest and get well and someone to take him, Please!
With the help of donations and the generosity of the caring veterinarian and staff at Stafford Oaks Veterinary Hospital, who also donated months of boarding, GHGSDR was able to save Phoenix's life. We learned from the vet that he probably was not set on fire, but that he was neglected so badly he was skin stretched over bones and covered in mange and infection. The vet was not sure this boy would live. He was brought into the clinic in critical condition, weighing 46 pounds. His skin was black in places, red and weeping, with only patches of black, tan, and cream fur. The first week he was at Stafford Oaks, he lay down almost all the time and slept. The second week he lifted his head and started looking around. The third week he sat up and then stood up on his own. The fourth week he was enjoying everyone, and they discovered he is extremely friendly and loving. The staff told me they will be in tears when he leaves because he is such "a cool guy" as one put it, and they all have grown very attached to him, to use their words again. Dr. Brady called him "a sweetheart and a lover." He loves people with a passion, and gets along beautifully with both small and large dogs.
We have named him Phoenix, which in Greek and Egyptian mythology was a bird that was consumed by fire and rose from the ashes in magnificence, representing life after death. We thought it was fitting.
After several months of care, Phoenix is recovering and learning to live the good life with one of our fosters while he completes heartworm treatment and waits for his forever home. Phoenix is very sweet and has never shown any aggression. He loves to play with toys and chew on bones. He also loves to play with his foster-sister, Gracie. They play hide-n-seek like pros! He is an alert and happy dog. He loves to do anything his foster mom wants to do but also loves to just lie down and take it easy when she is busy in the kitchen. He has a healthy appetite and should be an 80 pound dog. He takes direction easily and is learning to sit for his food.
