Hello, my name is Abbey!

Hello!  My name is – play?  You want to play? – Abbey!  I am – Did you say WALK? – a puppy.  Can we play?  Is that my leash?  Let’s go!!

My name is Abbey and I am alllll puppy!  I have a lot of energy and I need my walks like the flowers need rain.  I’m a very trainable girl and eager to please.  In just a few short days I’ve learned all kinds of things about living in a house and meeting other people and dogs.  I am learning to walk nicely on a leash.

Because I’m still a puppy, sometimes I get excited and will bark at people or animals that are far away.  Some people thought this meant I wouldn’t like kids or small dogs.  It turns out I'm just excited to meet them!  When I get close to them I’m very sweet and so happy to say hello.  At a pet festival recently I met everything from a 150-pound giant mastiff to a 1-pound Chihuahua puppy – and everything in between – and I was equally sweet to every dog and every person.  My new favorite thing is when it’s my turn to walk to the nearby elementary school and I get to meet lots of kids!

I really want to chase cats, but I’ve never met one in person, so who knows?  If I was properly introduced to one, I might want to be friends.

Here is what my foster mom has to say about me:  Abbey came to us just one week ago, housebroken but acting very wild and with no house manners.  We are thrilled by how quickly she has settled into a routine and learned how to behave in the house.  She is trained to a crate but she will bark a little if she hasn't been exercised enough.  On her walks she is being taught to walk next to us with a loose leash and to sit on her own whenever we stop walking.  She has been responsive to all training so far.  She is a very gentle-spirited dog.  If you walk her regularly and show her love, she will respond to gentle voice corrections and is well behaved.  She plays hard with our young male GSD, but has been super sweet with our two small children and a smaller dog who has health problems.  When she naps she curls up with the small dog in a protective way.  She will only come when she is called by a family member or someone she knows well (and then she comes running!), so we think she will be a very loyal family dog.  She needs a family that can reinforce rules for her firmly and fairly and show her lots of love while she matures.
